Gentle, instrument-assisted care for comfort and mobility
At Healing Creatures Holistic Animal Hospital, we take an individualized, integrative approach to helping pets move comfortably. Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM) is an instrument-assisted technique that may be incorporated into a broader plan for pets with musculoskeletal discomfort or restricted mobility.
What Is VOM?
VOM uses a handheld instrument to deliver brief, controlled mechanical impulses at selected locations along the spine, pelvis, or other musculoskeletal areas. The veterinarian assesses your pet’s history, examination findings, comfort, and response to treatment to determine whether this technique is appropriate. VOM practitioners use the instrument as part of a neuromusculoskeletal assessment and treatment approach; however, the specific proposed mechanisms and clinical benefits have not been well established in rigorous veterinary studies.
How Is VOM Different From Animal Chiropractic?
Both approaches aim to address musculoskeletal function, but their methods differ:
- VOM: Uses a handheld instrument to deliver repeatable, low-amplitude mechanical impulses without the twisting or thrusting associated with some manual adjustment techniques.
- Animal chiropractic: Typically uses hands-on assessment and carefully directed manual adjustments of joints and spinal segments; some practitioners also use instruments.
- Treatment experience: VOM sessions are often brief and may be well tolerated by pets that are sensitive to extensive handling. Neither method is automatically appropriate for every animal.
Neither VOM nor chiropractic should replace a veterinary diagnosis or evidence-based treatment for neurologic disease, fractures, unstable spinal conditions, or other serious problems.
When Might VOM Be Considered?
Depending on the examination and diagnosis, VOM may be considered as an adjunct for back or neck stiffness, age-related mobility changes, joint discomfort, muscle tension, or recovery plans following selected injuries. Pets with suspected intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), weakness, severe pain, or neurologic deficits require careful veterinary assessment before any manipulation is considered.
What Happens During a Visit?
We begin with a veterinary evaluation and discuss your pet’s medical history and mobility concerns. If VOM is appropriate, gentle instrument-assisted impulses are applied while your pet is positioned comfortably. Sedation is generally not required. Follow-up recommendations depend on your pet’s condition and response; improvements cannot be guaranteed.
An Integrative Approach
When indicated, VOM may complement acupuncture, therapeutic laser, rehabilitation strategies, conventional pain management, and individualized nutritional or herbal support. Our priority is a thoughtful plan that supports your pet’s comfort, safety, and quality of life.
Is VOM Right for Your Pet?

Important note: Published high-quality veterinary evidence specific to VOM is limited. It is offered as a complementary technique, not a proven cure or a substitute for necessary medical or surgical treatment.
